During a defiant statement to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “unbroken” supplies of energy resources to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “resistant to foreign coercion.”
This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding relations with Moscow. The context follows earlier US actions, notably the imposition of import duties targeting New Delhi because of its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.
“Russia is a reliable exporter of fuel and anything required for the development of India’s energy sector,” Putin said. “Moscow stands willing to persist in securing the steady delivery of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, though he did not referencing crude specifically, supported the sentiment by noting that “a stable energy base has been a key and crucial foundation of the India-Russia cooperation.”
Prior to the meeting, via a TV appearance, Putin had challenged American pressure on India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “Should America is entitled to buy our uranium, then why can't India have the same privilege?”
This trip marked his initial journey to India following the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a clear show to demonstrate that the friendship between the two leaders persisted strongly.
In a notable gesture, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. The two exchanged a hearty embrace like longtime companions before having a one-on-one meal together.
He referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and noted it was “founded on shared respect and deep trust.”
The bilateral summit resulted in a number of significant pacts regarding defence and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the signing of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which targets to boost mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the 2030 deadline.
Furthermore agreed to restructure their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's largest source of weapons, its share has declined in recent years as India works to diversify its procurement.
Their communique stressed plans for the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge military systems, even if specific mention of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.
Overall, Russia and India affirmed that in the “ongoing challenging, tense, and volatile global landscape, Russian-Indian ties remain resilient to outside forces.”
