Individuals from across the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.
The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of a different individual.
Providing a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
