Ex- National Football League star Antonio Brown is returning to Miami to confront an attempted murder accusation stemming from a incident that took place in May, with his lawyer submitting a not guilty declaration on his behalf.
Correctional logs in Essex, New Jersey, indicate that Brown was discharged on Tuesday early for his relocation to the state of Florida. Brown, one of the most popular figures in the National Football League, had waived extradition to Florida from New Jersey, where he was held after being arrested in the city of Dubai.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, said in an message that he has already submitted a written not guilty plea to the attempted murder accusation. Brown could be in a Miami courtroom as soon as Wednesday early for a release hearing, Eiglarsh stated.
According to his apprehension order, Brown is alleged of taking a pistol from a safety employee after a public figure match contest in May and firing a couple of shots at a man he had fought with earlier. The reported target, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, stated to investigators that a bullet scraped his neck.
Eiglarsh stated that Brown was only defending himself from Nantambu.
“The actions he was forced to take were solely in self-defense against the reported person’s hostile conduct. Brown was assaulted that evening and behaved within his rightful right to protect himself,” Eiglarsh said.
Brown was not right away arrested because originally officers did not identify Nantambu as a affected party. It wasn’t until later in May that Nantambu provided a full statement about the situation to authorities and pointed out Brown as the shooter, the report says.
Based on his digital updates, Brown had been residing in Dubai for multiple months. In a post after the confrontation, Brown stated he was safeguarding himself because he was “assaulted by numerous persons who sought to take my possessions and inflict personal damage to me.”
A second-degree attempted murder accusation in Florida bears a highest 15-year jail sentence and up to a $10,000 fine in the instance of a guilty verdict.
Brown has dealt with several legal problems over the time. He before had been accused of assault of a truck operator, various domestic violence charges, inability to pay parental support and additional incidents.
Throughout a recent match with his team against the New York Jets, Brown removed his shirt, shoulder pads and accessories and left the field, causing his dismissal by the franchise and practically halting his NFL career.
Brown, who spent 12 years in the National Football League, was an elite receiver who passed the bulk of his career with Pittsburgh. During his professional life, Brown had over 900 receptions for above 12,291 yards, the 28th most of history. He was a 7-time all-star selection.
