Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered numerous other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for information.

An important representative commented the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
