Arnaud Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Earn Sentimental Triumph Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out through the stadium as Forest followers celebrated another win against their Swedish opponents. Much has happened since Francis's winning header secured the European Cup in 1979, but Forest continue to cherish those glorious moments. Similarly, major shifts have taken place in the weeks since the manager took charge, with the team looking reinvigorated and securing a convincing victory courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of advancing in the Europa League.

Gaining Steam with Another Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – represented a third straight triumph across every tournament and added to the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup success in name, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant tension or jitters.

It proved to be an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third meeting between the sides since the showpiece event over four decades past.

The home side leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of that era by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Swedish club’s team from then were also in attendance. Both teams shared a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a rousing welcome when they gathered on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically impressive tifo was unveiled in the home stand.

Recalling the Past

“30th May 1979, Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” displayed half of a large banner, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the squads came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. Another stunning tifo depicted Clough watching proceedings beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Start

So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward fired an attempt wide inside the opening moments and established a two-goal advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence captained by their own academy product captain, Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to register his first goal since March.

Another Strike Confirms Control

Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his free header saved by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but the alert forward poised to tap in the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and just his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards Yates at the far post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was deflected aside off the back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who returned in place of the former Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to match the home team's intensity. Forest made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

Forest then pushed for more, with the winger chipping a effort on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort off target from distance. It was one of those evenings. Dyche, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented multiple alterations from the team that stunned Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, when they also scored three goals, though he called on substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.

Smooth Evening for Forest

It turned out to be a hiccup-free evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game already boxed off and later brought on teenage defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the current crop showed they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
