Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
